Tuwhare: The Web of Charlotte

Charlotte Yates is a recording artist based in Wellington where she has released four albums with original material.

After the sell-out season of Baxter (a compilation of James K Baxter's poetry set to music) at the 2000 Fringe Festival, Charlotte was commissioned by Toi Maori Aotearoa to adapt the concept to the work of this acclaimed poet and author.

In this special concert, top recording artists from around the country bring music to the words of renowned and much-loved New Zealand writer Hone Tuwhare.

Here's what Charlotte Yates has to say about Hone Tuwhare:

"I first met Hone Tuwhare in April 2004 at his crib in Kaka Point. We talked for six hours without interruption. He read some of his work - both old and new. He recited a lyric of mine out loud as a laugh, as if it was a grand poem, pronouncing it ‘good but offbeat’. He asked a great many questions and told a great number of stories, all the while feeding the pot belly stove we huddled around. He sang and so did I. Then we ate boiled eggs and drank tea. He talked about what was in the paper, about travels in Europe, friends, lovers and whanau. He asked me to fix his DVD player, to change a light bulb and who had won the Nobel Prize for Literature this year. The whole time I was there he used words joyfully, as if they were exquisitely made tools or toys, constantly shuffling and nudging them into different positions to see where they landed, looking at them this way and that in the light, rolling them around in his hands. It was profoundly pleasurable to listen to. It sounded like music to me."

If you would like to hear Charlotte's musical interpretation of Hone Tuwhare's poems along with other famous Kiwi musicians (Goldenhorse, Dallas Tamaira from Fat Freddy's Drop, Hinemoana Baker and more) make sure you don't miss Tuwhare.
