Hurricanes v Wellington Tigers Aussie Rules Match

The Hurricanes Super 14 players will play Australian Rules against the Wellington Tigers on Tuesday at 3pm at Elsden Park, Porirua. The aim is to improve their aerial skills, ball-handling and kicking.

It's also a chance for you to see the Hurricanes in their pre-season warm-up against Wellington's Aussie Rules selection.

It has been organised to introduce some variety into the pre- season fitness programme for the Hurricanes squad in the lead-up to the Super 14.

The cross-over between rugby and AFL is gaining momentum, mainly thanks to Hurricanes and All Blacks kicking coach Michael Byrne, a former AFL player who turned out in 150 games for Sydney, Melbourne and Hawthorn.

All Blacks fitness trainer Graham Lowe is another with an AFL background, having played a season of Australian rules for North Shore Tigers. And All Blacks first five Nick Evans represented the New Zealand under-21s Aussie rules side on a tour to Australia.

The Wellington Tigers team will include talented local rugby players Isaac O'Connor and James Kusel, who are trying to follow a similar career path to Evans'.
