Rock2Wgtn Visual Effects

Construction of the visual effects for the Rock2Wgtn rock extravaganza are under way at Weta Workshop Studios in Wellington.

Below is an artist impression from WETA Workshop showing the huge dragon (Drusilla) that Richard Taylor and his team are currently constructing in Wellington for Rock2Wgtn. It will be one of the biggest effects ever made for a rock concert anywhere in the world and with smoke, fire and laser eyes - a very unique feature that will dominate the skyline of Westpac Stadium during the two rock concerts.

Other effects are also in construction including 30 costumed Zombie Cheerleaders and 2 huge guitar axes as stage effects.

Rock2Wgtn is more than just a series of bands playing in a traditional festival format - it is a theatrical production unlike anything ever seen in New Zealand, with pyrotechnics, lasers, stunt people, dancers, flame effects, giant screens and sets designed at WETA Workshops Studios.

Promoter Phil Sprey of Capital C Concerts said Wellington was one of the most creative places around – and he wanted to tap into that by using Weta Workshop for the special effects. That includes stage design for the whole festival, as well as developing a theme which involves the dragon seen above. The idea is to build a whole experience for fans, and to make it more than just a bunch of bands on the stage. Those attending either or both of the 5 hour back to back concerts will get a visual feast that they will never forget.
