Carols By Candlelight 2009 The More FM Carols By Candlelight is on tonight at a new venue, Waitangi Park. The weather is looking fine but be prepared to stay warm with a coolish evening expected. Join around 12,000 Wellingtonians at this entertaining free family event at Waitangi Park today, Wednesday 16 December. Carols By Candlelight is a great opportunity to gather with family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere before the chaos of Christmas. Home grown entertainer and radio DJ Nick Tansley of MORE FM hosts this much anticipated night of free entertainment and Christmas Carols performed by a host of talented New Zealanders. Pre-entertainment starts at 7pm with several musicans, including Andrew London and Wayne Mason, playing to the crowd. The concert kicks off at 7:30pm, earlier than past years, and finishes at 9:30pm in time to get the young ones home to bed. Crowds can bring a rug and picnic hamper (no alcohol though), but you will need to get there early to find a good spot on the grass. This is the 19th year of the Wellington Carols By Candlelight, and the event is returning to its roots with a more low-key, family focused event that's all about having a sing-along in the spirit of Christmas. There is something for people of all ages and music genres, so this is a great opportunity to gather with family and friends and relax before the madness of Christmas kicks in. It's a night of joy with the kind of enthusiasm that can only be matched at large sporting events. It seems so simple - if the performers are having fun then so is the audience. Things people are encouraged to bring:
Since its inception in Wellington on the back of a flat bed truck, Carols by Candlelight has become synonymous with Wellington and growing in its iconic stature nationwide. It has moved venues several times, from Frank Kitts Park to Westpac Stadium and last year to the Basin Reserve. Carols by Candlelight is proudly brought to you by MORE FM. MORE FM will broadcast a special live Carols By Candlelight show on air from 5pm on the night. There will be plenty of food stalls at Waitangi Park. Some people bring candles but with Wellington's wind you can never be sure of them staying lit, so it's a good idea to bring some cash and buy glow sticks on the night. Proceeds from the sale of glow sticks go to the Wellington Children's Hospital, and there will be collecters there if you wish to donate more. People heading to the Christmas Carols at Waitangi Park in Wellington are urged to take care where they park and how they cross the roads. Pedestrians are encouraged to be safety conscious; to look before they cross the roads, obey the traffic signals or follow the directions of police officers. The car park in Courtenay Central is five minutes walk down the road and is a good option for those driving in. Please note: Carols by Candlelight goes ahead rain or shine.
