Thorndon Fair The Thorndon Fair, organised by Thorndon School, is being held on 6 December 2009. It is noted as being Wellington's oldest, biggest, brightest and best street fair. The Thorndon Fair is traditionally an excellent opportunity for people to come along and purchase gifts for Christmas. The fair runs along Tinakori Road from Bowen Street to Harriet Street, and up Hill Street as far as Selwyn Terrace. This year it should have in excess of 250 stalls, with stallholders coming from as far north as Auckland and from as far south as Christchurch. It is anticipated that at least 25,000 people will visit the fair, soaking up the atmosphere of the arts, jewellery, and craft stalls, food and entertainment available on the day. This fair provides ample opportunities to local crafts people, and those from further afield to make substantial returns on the day and to network and improve the effectiveness of their businesses. This event is the major fundraiser for Thorndon School and helps to provide a quality learning environment for one of the most diverse school rolls in Wellington. The school community covers the whole city and beyond, with children coming from the Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata, Porirua and Paraparaumu. The fair provides an opportunity for the school children to participate fully in the fair through their own range of stalls and typically has voluntary help from at least one other family member per household either in the preparation for the fair and/or on the day itself. The sense of contribution to the community from this participation is immense. |
