Culture Kicks Football Tournament

Dust off your footy boots, pull on your shin pads and perfect your Mark Paston save for Culture Kicks, Wellington’s very own international world cup at Martin Luckie Park on Sunday 28 March 2010.

Wellington is set to go football crazy in the lead up to the World Cup in South Africa and what better way to celebrate than having our very own football festival.

Culture Kicks is a football tournament where local teams representing countries and regions from all over the world will demonstrate their skills in the beautiful game. Five-a-side teams representing countries from all over the world will battle it out for a chance to take the 2010 trophy to a backdrop of drumming, dance and anthems sung throughout the day.

Bring your football chants and anthems because this is one festival day you won't want to miss.

Even if you're not a fan of the sport, it will be well worth your while checking out everything else on offer. There will be a variety of international food stalls, free children's activities such as face painting, Push Play games and a great line up of cultural groups performing.

The day kicks off just before 9.00am with prizegiving at 4.30pm.

Wellington City Council event organiser Craig Ireson says the football tournament has grown a great deal since it began four years ago.

“We had no idea that it would take off the way it has,” says Craig. “Last year we had 40 teams and several more on a waiting list. It won’t be long before we’ll have to make the event a weekender!”

“And last time we had the most teams from Aotearoa than ever before – a grand total of eight,” says Craig. “Most of them were made up of existing football teams such as Olympic and Wellington United, but we also had teams representing Wellington Police and the Wellington Fire Service.”

There will also be a women’s only competition for women’s teams who want some pre-season competition.

The day isn’t just about football either It’s a celebration of all the different cultures that live in Wellington – whether they have just arrived in the last few years or are third-generation Italian. So come along and enjoy the football, food, music, and colours from nations around the world. There’ll be children’s entertainment too, so make sure to bring the little ones along.

Come along to watch the games and absorb the atmospheric tastes, sounds and colours of all the footy-crazed nations at Martin Luckie Park. This is also the last event in the Wellington Summer City festival before we plunge headlong into autumn, so make sure you get the whole family out for one last blast of summer fun until next time!
