Wellington Phoenix FC Season Fixtures 2010/2011 New Zealand’s most exciting sporting phenomenon, the Sony Wellington Phoenix FC, delivered a semi final and another season of red-hot football action in the Hyundai A-League last season - can they do it again in 2010/2011? It is the hottest ticket in town – a Wellington Phoenix match at Wellington's Westpac Stadium during the Hyundai A-League season. As the Phoenix take on Australia’s best football clubs in an expanded competition, the football action will be hotter and more intense than ever. After the exceptional 2009/10 season which saw sold out crowds at Westpac Stadium, this season promises to be the biggest and best yet. Wellington Phoenix FC will play 15 games at home during this year’s 30-game Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season. See the full draw below. The first match of the season for the Phoenix will be a pre-season match against Argentinian giants Club Atletico Boca Juniors on 23 July at Westpac Stadium. The South American superclub will make the trip to New Zealand for the first time in its long and illustrious history as part of an Australasian tour that will also see it play the Phoenix’s fellow Hyundai A-League club Melbourne Victory. The Hyundai A-League is the premier Australasian domestic football (soccer) competition. The league is contested by 10 teams covering Australia’s major cities and regional centres, as well as one team based in Wellington, New Zealand. The draw for the 11-team competition has been released, with the season kicking off on Thursday 5 August. However, the Phoenix will spend the first round sizing up the opposition with a bye before kicking things off on-field at home at Westpac Stadium against Gold Coast United on Friday, August 13. They back that up at home against the Central Coast Mariners the following weekend. The addition of new club Melbourne Heart for the 2010/11 season means all clubs will have three byes during the regular season. The Phoenix play 14 regular season matches at their Westpac Stadium fortress – where they are unbeaten in 19 matches – and one at AMI Stadium in Christchurch. Last season’s match against Adelaide United at the Garden City’s revamped stadium drew a bumper crowd of more than 19,000, while Westpac Stadium hosted more than 57,000 fans for the Phoenix’s two Finals Series games in February and March. Another significant aspect of the 2010/11 draw is the addition of midweek games. The Phoenix will play six Wednesday evening matches, with three of those at Westpac Stadium. Of the remaining 13 regular season home matches the Phoenix will play two Friday evening matches, four Saturday evening matches and six Sunday afternoon matches. The scheduling of a Bon Jovi concert in Wellington in December forced Wellington Phoenix FC to alter its Hyundai A-League 2010/11 fixture schedule. The American rockers play at Westpac Stadium on December 4 – the day before the Phoenix were set to host Adelaide United at their Wellington fortress. With the packdown of the group’s stage show likely to take several days following the concert, the Phoenix have had to move the clash with Adelaide. As a result, the Phoenix now take on the Reds at AMI Stadium in Christchurch on Sunday, December 5. The match originally scheduled in Christchurch on December 18 against the Newcastle Jets will be played at Westpac Stadium. After the match head to the Four Kings in Courtenay Place for a drink - Four Kings is the official bar for Sony Wellington Phoenix FC football supporters. The Sony Wellington Phoenix made history by making it to the semi final stage in 2010. However the loss to Sydney FC means that they failed to make it to the grand final. That's a major achievement and we say "well done the Wellington Phoenix." The Phoenix beat Perth Glory in a penalty shoot out in Wellington in their first match in the finals series of the competition to secure a spot against the Newcastle Jets in Hyundai A-League. With that last home match won, the Sony Wellington Phoenix made their way to Sydney for a crack at the grand final.
