Sunday Live Music Concerts As part of the Museum’s annual Sampler Season festival, these free Sunday afternoon concerts give you the perfect chance to get in from the cold and sample a veritable feast of musical talents. Two live performances every Sunday afternoon feature a range of acts from talented New Zealand musicians. Blues guitar, traditional Appalachian mountain ballads, contemporary folk, Celtic harp, and jazz give you just a taste of the many music styles that will have your toes tapping and your imagination wondering. Concerts begin at 2pm and 3.15pm and no bookings are necessary – just turn up and be captivated! Sunday Live Music Programme 20 June 2.00-2.45pm Helena Triplett Traditional Appalachian mountain ballads and early gospel tunes accompanied by clawhammer banjo. Gillian Welch fans will love this. 20 June 3.15-4.00pm Dave Murphy ‘...one of the finest blues guitar finger pickers around. He flicks between ragtime, slide and pre-war blues with consummate ease’ - Grant Smithies. 27 June 2.00-2.45pm Matt Pike A mix of original compositions and familiar covers from renowned vocalist and Whole Lotta Love member. 27 June 3.15-4.00pm Full Fathom More mighty shanty singing from these master and commanders. Plenty of rousing choruses where you can’t help but join in. 4 July 2.00-2.45pm Paddy Burgin Original tuneful songs using slinky slide acoustic guitars and cahoon box percussion, coupled with the intriguing stories of people and places that inspired the music. 4 July 3.15-4.00pm Simon Burgess Using 5-string banjo, mandolin and guitar, Simon weaves musical influences for American Independence Day without losing his Irish roots. Spiced up with Colleen Trenwith on fiddle and Mark Howell on hammered dulcimer. 11 July 2.00-2.45pm Peter Daly & Bernard Wells Two of Wellington’s finest talents combine viola, guitar and flute to create intriguing compositions and improvisations drawing on classical, jazz, blues and world folk. 11 July 3.15-4.00pm Catgut & Steel The Dunedin based contemporary folk act of Mike Moroney and Anna Bowen on guitar, fiddle and mandolin, deliver fresh antipodean music with a touch of kiwi-Dutch. 18 July 2.00-2.45pm Helen Capes Influences of Northumberland’s rich tradition of tales and tunes, this lively performer has the audience riveted. 18 July 3.15-4.00pm VPR Express The synchronicity of old friends is evident in this threesome with Victoria Smith providing vocals and whistle, Peter Conway on mandolin, guitar and vocals and Robbie Duncan on guitar. 25 July 2.00-2.45pm Roger Lusby This Nelson singer-songwriterbush poet captivates and amuses with songs and stories of Antarctica and The Optimist. 25 July 3.15-4.00pm Barry & Marian Carter A menagerie of original songs and arrangements on themes from love and regret, to a ghost train, a murder victim and middle-earth. Complemented by Celtic, Klezmer and Brazilian instrumentals. 1 August 2.00-2.45pm Helen Webby Principal harpist for Christchurch Symphony plays a selection of heartbreakingly beautiful Celtic music from her new CD The Golden Strand. ‘...intensely musical, stylish and absorbing’. - David Sell, The Press 1 August 3.15-4.00pm BB & Alex The dynamic duo BB Bowness and Alex Borwick (pictured) ramp it up with 5-string banjo and an Irish tenor banjo to create unique sounds referencing bluegrass, celtic, jazz, and even classical music. |
