Hutt City was formed in 1989 after the amalgamation of the City of Lower Hutt and the boroughs of
Eastbourne, Petone and Wainuiomata. As such it
boasts a wide range of amenities that justify the city’s image as a great place in which to live,
work and play.
Residents are spoilt for choice with four indoor pools – including an Olympic size pool at
Naenae – and two outdoor pools. Parks and playgrounds are plentiful and well maintained, ensuring a
healthy sporting environment and thriving sports clubs.
The Hutt River, which flows from the Tararua Ranges through to its estuary at Petone, dominates
the city. Despite its largely urban course, it is treasured by anglers for its brown trout. Summer
swimmers can choose from many sedate swimming spots, where the grassy riverbanks provide pleasant
picnicking. Kayaking is also popular. The Hutt River Trail can take walkers and cyclists from Petone right through to Upper Hutt.
Dozens of tracks and trails of varying difficulty cut through the bush-clad hills around the
city. Whether mountain biking, serious hiking or just talking a leisurely walk, the native birdlife
and fauna are always present.
The city’s shopping attracts many visitors. The recently refurbished Westfield Queensgate
complex in the heart of the city is the largest shopping centre between Auckland and Christchurch,
and Petone’s Jackson Street offers leisurely
shopping in a heritage precinct.
Hutt City is a thriving business centre, with large distribution and manufacturing facilities at
Seaview/Gracefield and Wingate. Several corporations have based their offices in the city, where
they can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and still be only 10-20 minutes away from Wellington City.
