Trentham Racecourse opened on a sunny Wellington Anniversary Weekend in 1906. Recently
celebrating its Centennial - Trentham Racecourse has become something of a iconic Wellington venue.
Wellingtonians have long been horse racing enthusiasts, in fact the first ever officially
recorded horse race in New Zealand took place on a dusty Wellington street (now known as Taranaki
Street) in September 1840.
Despite the early start, racing in Wellington took a while longer to become properly
established. Sixty-six years after that initial race Trentham Racecourse opened with Anniversary
Handicap won by a horse named Boris.
Trentham Racecourse's track design is widely acknowledged as one of the best in Australasia, a
fact demonstrated by the amount of world records broken on it over the years.
Trentham is steeped in history and not just as a horse racing venue. During the war soldiers who
landed on Gallipoli trained on the course, creating permanent ties between the RSA and the
Racecourse.
The thrill of dressing in your finest clothes and watching the horse you backed has not
diminished over the years – Trentham Racecourse remains as popular today as it was one hundred years
ago.
It's not just racing though, you can book Trentham Gardens for weddings, conferences, meetings,
functions and balls. Take your pick from 67 hectares of lawns and landmark buildings. Contact them
today on 0800 TRENTHAM or hospitality@trentham.co.nz and discuss how you can make a special occasion
perfect.
