THE SOUTHERN CROSS: GARDEN, BAR AND RESTAURANT
The Southern Cross is Te Aro's local
watering hole. Revamped in Nov 05 the bar still proudly holds onto its funky and contemporary 100%
kiwi identity.
Amazingly designed architecture by John Mills Architects and beautiful intriguing decor has
created a spacious bar with interconnected yet private spots all with inviting style and pacific
character.
The SX restaurant with Stonegrill dinning kicks up kiwi traditions by more than just a notch
(Brunch 8-2 Weekdays, 9-2 Weekends, After Two menu, yup you guessed it…after 2pm everyday).
BEEN ROUND FOR YONKS!
A tavern or hotel has been on the Abel Smith Street site since the
1860s but never has it been so fresh! The almighty bar still has it’s accommodation perks, but to
make room for the place it is now, we’ve had to build a brand spanker next door. Short or long stay
check out www.sxapts.co.nz.
Back then it was a meeting place for men who would eventually form the first Wellington Football
Club. Originally called the Victorian Hotel, a fire in the late 1960s razed the building and it was
rebuilt as the original Southern Cross Tavern. In the early 1980s it became known for its steak and
salad – kiwi pub grub, while come the 1990s as Zebos, it became the most well-known student pubs in
Wellington famous for its $2 jugs.
These days the tavern remains the perfect
destination for relaxed, spacious dining or drinks with friends or business colleagues, especially
when the house organist cranks his 1965 Hammond Organ.
Sunday brunch sessions at The Cross provide entertainment for the whole family, with face
painting, videos and arts and crafts to keep the kids occupied while parents can enjoy a Southern
Cross breaky. Entertainment 10.-2.00pm Every Sunday.
Check out our truckload of events, there always seems to be something on at The Cross...
