Travelling between Wellington’s CBD and Wellington Airport, it’s impossible to miss Kilbirnie
Park’s expansive green fields, just across Wellington Road from Evans Bay.
This is the main sporting venue in Wellington's eastern suburbs with four main playing fields
and three fields nearby. It’s home base to the Poneke Football Club (established in 1883). The club
claims six former All Black captains, including Billy Wallace and New Zealand's rugby pioneer Thomas
Ellison.
Facilities at Kilbirnie Park include an indoor rugby training centre and clubrooms with full
bar. In the northern corner on Kilbirnie Crescent is the pavilion for The Eastern Suburbs Cricket
Club and adjacent to the ground at the southern end is the extensive Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre with
its many heated indoor pools.
Schools and sports clubs can book Kilbirnie Park for games and practices. Businesses and
community groups can also book grounds for activities and team-building days. Discounts for schools
can be negotiated. Bookings require notice of at least three working days.
Golf practice and dogs are not allowed on the ground.
