Just minutes from downtown Wellington, lies a place unlike any other – ZEALANDIA: The Karori
Sanctuary Experience.
Home to some of the rarest and most extraordinary wildlife on the planet, ZEALANDIA is New
Zealand’s award-winning eco-attraction. Your ZEALANDIA experience includes an exciting new
exhibition and walk in the ever-changing sanctuary valley.
Inside the new state of the art visitor centre, immerse yourself in interactive displays where
you can see, feel and play with the history of New Zealand’s wildlife and landscape – from untouched
paradise, to the tragic destruction caused by humans and finally the restoration and conservation
efforts of today.
Then spend an hour or two exploring the sanctuary valley, with its easy-walking bush tracks,
protected by a predator-proof fence enclosing 225 hectares of regenerating forest. This is your best
chance of seeing tuatara and many other iconic native species – in the wild on the mainland, yet
just minutes from the bustle of Wellington City.
And when you need a break, enjoy refreshments at Rata Cafe located within the
Exhibition Centre.
And consider booking on a daily ZEALANDIA by Night tour. After a tour of the exhibition in the
visitor centre, step through the predator-proof fence. And as darkness falls, your guide will start
looking for the elusive national mascot – the kiwi. Over 100 call the ZEALANDIA valley home, so
there’s a good chance of spotting one, foraging in the leaf litter! This is an utterly unforgettable
experience: New Zealand at its very best.
ZEALANDIA has been voted one of the top 25 eco-restoration projects in Australasia, and is one
of only 75 organisations in the world included in The Guardian Green Travel List 2010.
ZEALANDIA is at the end of Waiapu Road, Karori. For pricing and other visitor information visit
our website, or call +64 4 920 9200.
Accessibility
ZEALANDIA: The Exhibition is fully wheelchair-accessible. The ZEALANDIA sanctuary valley offers
some easy grade, no-step tracks suitable for wheelchairs or the vision impaired. As the valley is a
wilderness area, it is requested that vision impaired and people in wheelchairs have a companion
with them. Guide dogs are permitted. There is a large car-park with disabled parking available.
ZEALANDIA, a wonderful natural experience for the whole family.
