Weta, the Academy Award winning company that brought Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia to
life, have opened their doors to the public for the first time with the Weta Cave.
This unique venue is one of Wellington’s biggest tourist attractions and is an important part of
New Zealand culture. Weta Cave can be found on the corner of the Weta Workshop building in Miramar.
The museum is designed to give you exclusive insight into the creativity and imagination that
goes into crafting the art of Weta. Anyone who loves movies and pop culture and the intricacies of
creating the costumes, special effects and characters will love exploring Weta Cave. If screen
blockbusters like the Legend Of Zorro, King Kong, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Chronicles Of
Narnia, TV shows like Doctor Who, or games like Halo and Hellgate are your thing, then you won’t
want to miss the opportunity to visit this fascinating treasure trove.
Weta Cave is a particularly unique place, incorporating a mini Museum, Shop and Mini Theatre all
in the one Cave. In the mini-museum, you come face to face with some of the characters, props and
displays from your favourite movies. Read the stories of how they were brought to life and learn
about the artists who created them. In the mini theatre you can view a 20 minute behind-the-scenes
DVD with unique footage and interviews with Weta co-founders Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor, Tania
Rodger and Jamie Selkirk.
Weta Cave gives the opportunity to share some of Weta’s work with visitors from Wellington and
all corners of the world.
Entry to the Weta Cave is absolutely free.
