Nestled in a small valley on Ottawa Road, Ngaio Village is a tiny interlude on the main
thoroughfare journey across Wellington’s western suburbs. But to the local residents, and those who
stop by, it is the centre of a close-knit community where people meet and shop.
Ngaio Village is a great place to catch a coffee or light meal, convenience shop or find
something special. The Cummings Park Library, Toy Library and Ngaio Medical Centre are close by and
historic Chew Cottage sits just a few metres south on Ottawa Road.
Ngaio has always been a character-filled neighbourhood. It has much history to draw upon from
its early days on the ‘Bridle Track', which was built in 1840 (now Ottawa Road) and the Wellington
to Manawatu main-trunk railway line (now Wellington
to Johnsonville).
Ngaio residents will sometimes tell you it's a more grounded and unpretentious suburb than its
larger neighbour to the north east, Khandallah. But whatever the perceptions, Ngaio
is a very pleasant and leafy place and with its surrounding suburbs of Wadestown, Crofton Downs and Khandallah, offers
families and people of all ages, many facilities and outdoor recreational possibilities.
