The Wadestown Village shopping area is an interlude as one whisks through between Thorndon and
Wellington’s eastern and northern suburbs. Similar to the neighbouring Ngaio shopping area, Wadestown’s shops
are a convenience stop for commuters and focal point for local residents.
Wadestown is an understated yet stylish suburb resting on the southern slopes of Ngaio Gorge and
Wellington’s western hills, just north of Thorndon. As an extension of Wellington’s premier western
suburbs; Karori, Kelburn and Thorndon, Wadestown is part of a
relatively affluent belt of residential enclaves. Many houses are almost grand with white-painted
weatherboard, verandas and ample gardens.
However, the early intension for Wadestown was as a workers’ settlement just beyond the edge of
Wellington’s early encampment on the western shores of Port Nicholson. The development of the suburb
began in 1840 when land was bought up to develop into some forty country sections. Most of the
sections were small and since most working people of the time could not afford a horse and cart, the
streets were made very narrow with many thoroughfares taking the direct route up steep hillsides,
rather than traversing the slopes.
Today you’ll find that most residents are typical of Wellington’s professional and public
service set. Many families have lived in Wadestown for generations and it continues to attract new
residents looking for somewhere close to the city, but nonetheless, far enough away for a quieter
life.
