Events Wellington was established in December 2001 as an Incorporated Society and publicly
launched with a function hosted by Mayor Kerry Prendergast on 13 May 2002. It is a membership
organisation made up of individuals, companies and groups who play a role in Wellington events. The
organisation does not run events itself, but members often collaborate to develop opportunities or
assist each other to bring the required skills together. Events Wellington is committed to
providing support for member initiatives and to help improve the credibility and operation of the
Wellington event industry. The events industry generates millions of dollars of direct and
indirect revenue into the Wellington economy, and large scale, complex events require a very high
level of experience and expertise that has not always been acknowledged or appropriately
valued. Events Wellington has already developed a positive and constructive relationship with
most stakeholder organisations, including the Wellington City Council, Positively Wellington Tourism
as well as venue and tourism related businesses. Notably, the Wellington City Council has been
a very active supporter of events in Wellington for many years including initiating the New Zealand
Festival, Nissan Mobil 500 and investing in significant infrastructure such as the Westpac Stadium,
Wellington Convention Centre etc. Events Wellington’s aim is to build on this goodwill and
infrastructure, and work constructively with all interested parties to identify and develop events
that add value to the Wellington region. That means encouraging the efficient use of facilities;
bringing visitors to the city and region; generating a national and international media profile;
adding value to key industries; enhancing the perception that the Wellington region is a great place
to live and work in; and generating pride and passion about being a Wellingtonian. Mission
